6 Months on the Road- A Dog’s View

This past October my human parents decided to take me on a cross-country trip in our RV.  Of course I had no idea what that meant.  To me my whole world was home, the RV and some long weekends in Acadia National Park and the White Mountain National Forest.  I learned a lot of things in the past 6 months and thought I would share it with other dogs and humans who might decide to take this same adventure. Petrified Forest National Park

A trip to the Petrified Forest National Park was a last minute decision for us. We knew it was going to be about a 2.5-3 hour ride each way from Cottonwood Arizona but we figured with an early start we could have plenty of time at the park. This park had not been high on our “must see list”. We had seen a “petrified tree” when we were at Yellowstone National Park a few years ago and it was less than remarkable. We did not have high expectations for this park because of this. Continue reading

The top 5 things I have learned in 2 days in Arizona-by Gizmo

  1. The days are warm and the nights are cold. Mom says I have to wear a sweatshirt to bed so I don’t get chilly
  2. Mom and dad keep a close eye on me when I’m outside. It’s because we have Javelinas in our campground
  3. It’s much friendlier for dogs here. I can hike in the Coconino National Forest. I can even hike on the trails at Montezuma’s Castle national Monument
  4. I’m going to get a lot a bubble baths. Mom says I turn into a redhead when I go hiking in the Sedona red rocks.  She said there’s no way I’m getting into bed without a bubble bath after hiking
  5. The other thing I’ve learned, is I’m no longer heading west mom says we’re heading east and making our way slowly back home. I was beginning to think we lived in the RV.

Acadia N.P.- Sight Seeing by vehicle

There are many sights you can see by driving through Acadia National Park.  The park loop road and Cadillac Mountain are probably the 2 most popular.  You can take the park bus to see the park loop road.  The best part about taking the park bus is you can get on and off at each of the stops and not worry about finding a place to park.  In the peak of the summer it can be nearly impossible to find a parking spot at some of the more popular attractions. Acadia National Park-Where to Stay

Next week we will begin our 1-month journey back to the east coast.  I have been thinking a lot about New England and our favorite places.  At the same time we have been asked a lot of questions about Maine by fellow RV’ers so I thought what better way to share this information then to create some blogs about our favorite spots. Joshua Tree in Bloom- slow down and look close

The weather in Palm Desert continues to set records with most days in the past couple weeks topping out above 90.  We have adjusted our plans to try to stay as cool as possible.  Yesterday we decided to revisit Joshua Tree National Park.  It is considered to be “the high desert” and most locations are around 4000 feet of elevation.  Because of that it is usually 10-15 degrees cooler than Palm Springs area.   Continue reading

Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument

Picasa Web Album for Organ Pipe Cactus

Sunday we decided we would take off on another road trip.  This time our destination was Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument.  This trip would be another 600 mile round trip road trip.  We packed the car with tent camping gear on Saturday evening so we would be ready to go first thing in the morning.  Not only were we looking at a 5-6 hour ride, but we would be turning our clocks forward to mountain time.  We were planning on camping at Twin Peaks campground right in the National Monument.  They are a first come, first serve park.  We had called ahead and the ranger said there should be room.  The ride was easy east across the 10 and then south just before Phoenix, and all the way to the Mexico border.  The landscape became much more vegetated as we drove south into the Sonoran Desert.  I later read that this desert is nicknamed “the green desert” because of this vegetation.  Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument literally sits on the border with Mexico.  In fact there are several places in the park where you can see the fence separating our two countries.  The whole area is filled with border patrol and signs warning you to look out for illegal immigration and smuggling. Death Valley- Super Bloom

Link to the full Picasa Web Album for the Death Valley Super Bloom

This past week John and I decided to make the long trek from Palm Springs up to Death Valley to get a glimpse of the valley carpeted with flowers.  We knew there was no way we could do the trip as a day trip as the ride alone was over 300 miles each way.  We also knew it would not be economical to move the RV over 600 miles for a single night.  It is pretty much peak season in Death Valley so I was not about to shell out the money needed to get a hotel room near the park, plus we would have to “sneak” Gizmo in.  We called the park and asked what the chances would be of getting a tent camping spot for the night.  The ranger told us that we should be able to get a site in the overflow Sunset campground Continue reading

Hughes Autoformer

Last week we decided to do a long day trip with our first stop being Anaheim, California.  The purpose of the trip to Anaheim was to stop at the office of Hughes Autoformers.  John had purchased a used Autoformer on Uncle Henry’s before we left on this trip.  He had confirmed with the person selling it that it was in good working order.  Unfortunately when we plugged it in after arriving in Palm Springs it was not working.  Lucky for us the corporate office for Hughes is in Anaheim and just 1.5 hours away.  We called them up and made an appointment to get our device looked at.
