A Review of the Apple Watch

I got my Apple watch just before leaving on our adventure and now I have had 3 months to play with it.  I love the watch, but like all items it has strengths and weaknesses.  Below is a list of what I think the Apple watch does well and what it could improve upon.    Continue reading

Trading in Palms for Pines

This week we decided to “trade in palms for pines” for a day.  We drove one hour west and 5100 feet up to the start of the hike for Black MountainContinue reading

My Favorite Travel Apps

I can’t imagine traveling without my smart phone.  It was instrumental in helping us plan our stops, where to stay, what to do and where to fuel up.  I know quite a few people laughed at the size of my iPhone 6 Plus but I knew I would be using it to look up information as we traveled down the road.  It is much easier to use the phone than it is to pull out the computer or iPad and hook up to the phone as a hot spot.  The larger screen of the iPhone 6 Plus made it easier to read.  I have compiled a list of some of our favorite apps for travel. Why aren’t you in Florida

Why aren’t you in Florida?  We have been asked that a lot on this trip.  It is very clear that there is an obvious “migration pattern” for snowbirds.  Those from the Northeast go to Florida and those from the Northwest go to Southern California.  We have seen very few New Englanders so far on our journey.  In fact we have only met 2 other couples from Maine.   Continue reading

A Data Diet

This last week we have really tried to slow things down knowing we are going to be here in Palm Springs until January 12th.  It has actually been really nice to not run off site seeing every day.  The weather is beautiful and the campground is pretty nice.  We have stayed busy taking Gizmo for walks, running in the evenings and hanging out by the pool mid-day.  We have taken advantage of the local events and we have registered for the Wild Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving day.  The sense of community appears to be very strong here in the Palm Springs area with lots of events on weekends (craft shows to dog adoption events) as well as lots of holiday events.  I really think I could enjoy spending entire winters in this area.   Continue reading

Painted Canyon- Ladder Loop Trail

The goal for yesterday was to take a tour of the Oasis Date Gardens followed by a tour of the  International banana museum.  We had looked up the date farm on line and it said they offered tours at 1030 so we left the RV around 0930 to make sure we arrived before the start of the first tour of the day.  Continue reading

Salton Sea and Salvation Mountain

This week we ventured out to the Salton Sea.  I really knew nothing about this area until we arrived in California so we did some online reading to learn more about it before visiting.

The Salton Sea region was part of the Gulf of California until about 4.4 million years ago.  The Colorado River silt eventually blocked off the gulf and separated the region from the Pacific Ocean.  Continue reading

Cooking on the Go- short update

We have just added a new item to our on the go cooking arsenal, the “Fasta Pasta“.  This is a great device for cooking up pasta in the microwave.  It saves the hassle of hauling out pots and pans and is super easy to clean up.  Our first batch of pasta came out great.   Continue reading

Learning to Take it Slow

One month out and I have not mastered the art of “taking it slow”.  On September 30th I worked my last full time shift at a place I had worked for nearly 30 years.  On October 1, just 12 hours later, we started a 6-month journey across the country.  Continue reading
